What happens when subatomic particles become instructions for a live performance? Join Rachael Nee, Dan Johnson and Anushiye Yarnell for a collaborative workshop exploring the strange and unpredictable meeting point between physics, sound, movement and performance.

Participants will explore the artistic potential of Rachael Nee’s muonic receiver, an instrument that detects subatomic particles and translates their movements into prompts. Three groups – one focusing on writing, one on movement and the other sound –, will approach the subject matter from a distinct angle, ultimately coming together in an improvisational live performance.

Open to all experience levels, with no specialist knowledge or previous experience required. When RSVP-ing, please specify a preference on either writing, music or dance so we can ensure a balance between disciplines when allocating places.

The Friday evening workshop will culminate in a live performance on Saturday. The performance is open to the public and will form part of the day-long programme of En Masse Community Hub at The People's Republic of Stokes Croft. See event for more details.

Dan Johnson is a Bristol-based percussionist whose practice centres on improvisation, deep listening and collaborative improvisation. Anushiye Yarnell is an interdisciplinary performance artist working across movement, sound, and participation to explore otherness, embodiment and imagination. Rachael Nee’s work spans sculpture, installation and performance, exploring the meeting point between art and science, with a particular fascination for physics, energy, entropy, scale, time and matter.

Venue access: The People's Republic of Stokes Croft is fully wheelchair accessible, but unfortunately the toilets are not. Some users may find grab rails helpful – see here for more information: https://prsc.org.uk/accessibility/

Particles in Performance w/ Dan Johnson, Rachael Nee & Anushiye Yarnell (workshop) is part of En Masse’s 2026 Community and Arts Programme. This free-to-attend programme aims to enhance access to creative opportunities in Bristol, empower a diverse range of individuals to pursue creative careers, and nurture Bristol’s independent arts ecosystem by making it more connected and resilient. We actively encourage applications from those whose backgrounds have historically been underrepresented in the culture sector.

This event is supported by Arts Council England.
