Building community through craft with Women in Hebron

Join South Bristol Apartheid-Free Zone and Women in Hebron on Saturday 17th October to connect, create, and learn together through Palestinian craft, film, and discussion.

In the afternoon we’ll be joined by a speaker from Women in Hebron, a cooperative for embroidery and craft by Palestinian women in the West Bank. They will be running a workshop from 2pm until 4pm so you can learn the Palestinian art of Tatreez. Afterwards they will talk about what is happening in the West Bank and how the cooperative is responding. You will also have the chance to buy beautiful handcrafted products made by the cooperative and support the work they are doing.

In the evening, starting at 6:30pm, we will be screening Carol Mansour’s Stitching Palestine, in collaboration with Bristol Palestine Film Festival. It follows twelve Palestinian women whose personal stories, memories and experiences of displacement are connected through Palestinian embroidery. Following the film we will hold a collective discussion about Tatreez, women’s histories, identity and cultural resistance.

Throughout the day we will have different activities you can get involved in including letter writing for UK prisoners for Palestine and sharing ideas about how to build a community boycott. There will be food and drink available.

Women in Hebron talk and stalls - Free Entry, this ticket includes the talk from Women in Hebron, and coming to the stalls and activities.
Film Screening of Stitching Palestine - £5, this ticket includes the film screening, talk from Women in Hebron, and coming to the stalls and activities.
Women in Hebron Tatreez workshop - £25, this ticket includes the Tatreez workshop (including materials), film screening, talk from Women in Hebron, and coming to the stalls and activities. Proceeds from this ticket go to Women in Hebron, and covers costs of materials.

Access and travel information

The event is being held in The Loft on Floor 3 of Tobacco Factory. Please use the theatre entrance on Raleigh Road and follow signs to the stairs or lift. We will have people at the entrance to welcome you.

Access information

Wheelchair and physical access: The event is being held in The Loft on Floor 3, which can be accessed via lift or stairs. There are steps into the event room but we will have ramps set up for accessing the room step free. 

Assistance dogs: You are welcome to bring your assistance dog into the venue.

Toilets: The event is on Floor 3 and there are accessible toilets on Floor 0, 1 and 2, which can be accessed via lift or stairs.

Sensory access: We will have a designated quiet room available.

Travel information

By bike: There are external and internal bike lock-up areas. Head to the lifts for internal bike racks.

By train: The venue is a 40 minute walk from Bristol Temple Meads, 20 minutes from Bedminster train station and 15 minutes from Parson Street.

By bus: Bus number 24 from North Bristol, Broadmead, the City Centre and Redcliffe Hill stops outside the Tobacco Factory. The M2 Metrobus route has stops nearby at Ashton Gate and the SS Great Britain.

By car: Parking is available in the local area surrounding Tobacco Factory but please be aware of restrictions. On street marked Blue Badge bays are available in the local area.
