Dive into grassroots activism with two inspiring films on communities fighting to protect nature, from the Philippines to the streets of North London.
Dahican (15m): Boogs Rosales
The film "Dahican" is a 15-minute documentary that sheds light on the ongoing struggles of turtle conservation in the Philippines. The film is set in Dahican Beach in Mati, Davao Oriental, where the hunting of endangered turtles for food and ornamental products is an all-too-common occurrence. Despite coming from a family of poachers and having limited resources, a group of surfers known as "Amihan sa Dahican" have taken it upon themselves to safeguard the marine life in the area.
The Happy Man Tree (75m): Katy McGahan
Have you ever fallen in love with a tree? When a group of local people in Hackney, north London, find out that the Council have granted a leading property developer permission to fell a much-loved 150-year-old London Plane street tree - which even has a name, the Happy Man Tree - they rally to save it from the clutches of the chainsaw.
