A
event
held at Sidney & Eden
on Tuesday 7th October. The event starts at 19:00.
The trailblazing director Elaine May only directed four films in her career, and all of them have since rediscovered as slept-on classics — including MIKEY AND NICKY (1976), her intense, gripping send up of toxic masculinity.
Peter Falk and John Cassavetes star as lifelong friends and petty criminals Mikey and Nicky, whose relationship is stretched to breaking point one night when the volatile, desperate Nicky rings Mikey pleading for help, fearful and paranoid that the mob is out to kill him.
With its emotional intensity, DIY indie aesthetics and incessant, seemingly improvised dialogue, the film is in part a homage to the pioneering films made by co-star and indie legend Cassavetes, but it also has unique eccentricities and a sense of humour that are distinctly Elaine May’s.
The film will screen at the Sunday and Eden on Tuesday 7th October at 19:00 with doors opening at 18:30. Entry is free, and all are welcome to stay for a drink afterwards — you might need one after this film’s shattering conclusion.
