Greenbank Folk Club presents - Kate Young at St Anne's Church, Eastville. Scottish artist and composer, Kate Young has recently released her album, Umbelliferæ, which is largely inspired by plantlore and the traditional uses of wildflowers from across the UK. Song-lead string arrangements make for a rich and unique listening and live experience - much like a sensorial wander through a botanical garden. Growing up immersed within a Folk music background in Edinburgh, Kate Young has emerged as one Scotland’s most innovative composers and musicians. She is driven by the exploration of new sounds found in traditional musics around the globe, which feed into her compositional world. As a musician, Kate combines voice with fiddle-playing techniques to conjure intriguing soundscapes as she navigates her way across musical genres. Over the last five years she has developed her interests in British plant lore and folktales, learning directly from books and then weaving information into her songs and compositions as a means to perpetuate and empower traditions at high risk of being lost. In 2016 she completed a significant commission for Celtic Connections’s New Voices and wrote a suite of pieces around the theme of the natural world. Her response – a complete repertoire of songs inspired by British medicinal plants, set to string quintet, with harp, double bass and percussion – was met with wide acclaim. A recipient of the prestigious Paul Hamlyn Award for Composers 2018, Kate has also toured globally with bands such as Moulettes, (Eliza Carthy MBE) Carthy, Hardy, Farrell & Young, Kathryn Tickell & The Darkening, Hannah James’s JigDoll Ensemble. Greenbank Folk Club is committed to developing our access & inclusion in every aspect of what we do. We strongly advise that you book in advance if you'd like to attend as we cannot guarantee there will be door tickets available if the event sells out. This event will take place at St Anne's Church, Easton, Bristol and will be seated with some standing space. Seats are unallocated, first come first serve. Notice to wheelchair & mobility scooter users - we have ramp access to the venue if needed and can reserve you a space at the front (we advise that you arrive promptly). It is worth noting that St Anne's Church doesn't currently have proper disabled toilets available. There is a toilet available on level access but it is a fairly small, standard cubicle without much turning space. We are working with St Anne's Church to address this problem for the future. We also keep the lighting fairly low during the shows which can hinder mobility for some people. If this will be a problem for you please get in touch ahead of the show and we'll see what we can do to help. No strobe effects will be used during the show but stage haze will be used as part of the lighting system.
