See event details

A gig on Friday 7th November. The event starts at 19:30.

Improvised music trio held in The Pulp Room at St Anne's House Brislington, Bristol. Cosmic Fire Trio features the talents of Tim Funnell on Piano, Alex Merritt on Tenor Sax and Paolo Adamo on Drums. The trio use a range of compositional and improvisational techniques to bring out the fiery and transformational possibilities of music and art. The music aims at burning away the superfluous so that those who encounter it can be brought more directly in touch with their own selves.

The band is led by Tim Funnell who is a jazz pianist living and working in Bristol. He was lucky enough to study on the exclusive “New York comes to Groningen” program in the Netherlands where he was able to study with some of the best Dutch musicians and visiting New York teachers.

He now plays in various ensembles including bands which he leads under his name. He has performed with many fantastic musicians such as Sam Crockatt, Alina Engibaryan, Robert Brian, Patrice Blanchard, Alexander Skoric, Andrea Caruso, Alex Merritt, Sisanda Myataza, Greg Sterland, Pasquale Votino and Paolo Adamo.

His style encompasses various different elements from the rich tradition of jazz from stride to be-bop to contemporary pianists like Brad Mehldau and exploratory improvisers like Andrew Hill and Wayne Shorter.

Alex's first quartet release, 'Anatta' (2016), featured legendary American drummer Jeff Williams, received critical acclaim as a "promising debut, of striking quality" from the Guardian's John Fordham and was praised as "one of the best UK jazz recordings I've heard this year" by Marlbank's Stephen Graham on its release. Since this time Alex has also released two albums for the prestigious Barcelona-based label Fresh Sound New Talent; 'Mind-Ear-Ladder' in a co-led quintet with trumpeter Steve Fishwick (2022) and 'Common Threads' with the Fresh Sound Ensemble (2023).

Over the past decade, Paolo has collaborated and performed with a variety of esteemed musicians, such as Andy Sheppard, Jake McMurchie, John Law, John-Paul Gard, Ben Thomas, Lee Godall, and Chad Lefkowitz-Brown. His musical influences encompass jazz, funk, and Latin, drawing inspiration from legendary drummers like Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Brian Blade, Mark Guiliana, and Jeff Ballard. Colleagues and contemporaries describe his drumming as musical, energetic, and colorful, reflecting his deep understanding of rhythm and dynamics.
