A event on Today. The event starts at 19:00.
Following the magnificent half million strong TOGETHER demo on 28th March, what sorts of arguments over strategy and tactics are likely to arise as we attempt to take the movement against racism and the far right forward?
The scale of the growth of far right in Britain means that it's crucial to be clear about which strategy of opposition is most likely to be effective.
This inevitably means revisiting the rich heritage of previous thinking, coming out of earlier periods of mass struggle, about how we can obtain maximum unity of working people who agree to come together to fight as a 'united front' over one specific issue.
This is despite the significant differences in political outlook of the different forces involved, which maintain their political independence from each other. It represents a set of demands acceptable to both revolutionaries and sections of the working class who are not yet revolutionary.
But if on one hand there's a serious danger of insufficient unity, there's also the risk of creating the wrong kind of unity - such as in cases where a Popular Front has been prescribed involving an alliance with 'liberal' mainstream parties. In such situations the radical left can end up dropping their politics under pressure to keep more mainstream forces to the right onboard.
How can we apply these ideas and experiences in the specific situation we currently find ourselves in?
What do we need to do now to build the next giant mobilisation against Tommy Robinsons supporters in London on 16th May?
Come along and join in the discussion. Hosted by Bristol Socialist Workers Party.
