America's defeat in Vietnam was a humiliation that impacted its ability to intervene around the world in the following decades. How a tiny country took on the military might of the US is itself an incredible feat. More however was the level of opposition to the war within the US itself. From small beginnings the anti war movement grew to mobilise millions. It interconnected with a huge rebellion amongst America's Black population against the deep racism of the US state. Both of these led to massive upheaval within the armed forces themselves, a level of military opposition underreported in mainstream accounts. We also see a big wave of American workers strikes from 1968 to 1974 infected by the ideas and energy of the wider movements. This is a period of huge revolt in the belly of the beast!

At the present time of the US being at war with Iran, and when a more general drive to war is frighteningly evident, what can we learn from this past period?

This meeting will show film clips from the time and many iconic images .. as well as a few great songs from the era which still resonate today.
