HEATWAVES, EXTREME WEATHER AND ECOLOGICAL BREAKDOWN:
WHAT'S NEEDED TO STOP CLIMATE CATASTROPHE?

The terrifying current round of heatwaves and wildfires indicates the desperate urgency of taking action to prevent much more devastating effects of climate catastrophe. The crisis is intensifying and escalating, as food production is further threatened and more regions of the planet become uninhabitable and Europe heats up twice as fast as any other continent.

The fact that in the midst of this emergency Andy Burnham seems likely to approve the drilling for more oil and gas in the North Sea symbolises the utter recklessness of most of the political establishment. Meanwhile the mainstream media are still offering us an extremely narrow range of options, from air conditioning for all to - as the BBC recently suggested - everyone going to use the sauna to get used to extreme heat!

Now more than ever we need to think much more radically than this, grappling politically with the nature of fossil fuel capitalism as a system and the barriers to its fundamental transformation.

Why is it that for so many it's 'easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism'?
