Jan Jelinek + Ben Bertrand + mary hurrell at Strange Brew
Headfirst Editor's Pick

"Sell out warning! Jan’s sampledelic impressionism quietly changed the game with ambient glitch perfection, forged from the cracks between jazz grooves. Warm static, mesmeric loping loops and AV wonderment herald the coming of a true GOAT; add in Ben Bertrand’s bass clarinet breath tunnels and this is iconic action FFO: Pole, Stroom, Moritz von Oswald, Wolfgang Voigt, Colin Stetson."

A gig held at Strange Brew on Friday 13th March. The event starts at 19:00.

Strange Brew presents Jan Jelinek (AV Set) & Ben Bertrand & mary hurrell Friday 13 March 2026 19:00 - 22:00 Jan Jelinek is a German electronic musician, producer, and sound artist based in Berlin, widely recognized as a pioneer in the sound collage and experimental electronic music scene. He is known for his unique style, which transforms samples from vintage jazz, funk, and rock recordings into abstract, minimalist electronic compositions. Jan Jelinek’s works translate popular music sources into abstract textures. Rather than using traditional instruments, he constructs collages out of tiny sound particles. Since 2000, he has released material under both his own name and various pseudonyms (incl. Ursula Bogner). His many collaborations include projects with Sven-Åke Johansson, Sarah Morris and Masayoshi Fujita. In 2007, together with Hanno Leichtmann and Andrew Pekler, he founded the improvisation trio Groupshow, and in 2008 he established the Faitiche label as a publishing platform for his own experiments, for collaborations, and for works by musician friends. Since 2012, he has been writing and producing experimental radio plays for public broadcaster Südwestrundfunk (SWR) that explore fictional identities and soundscapes. Ben Bertrand is a Belgian bass clarinetist and composer. With his instrument and countless machines, Ben creates his live sets with a hypnotic web of sounds. Listening to his music is like sitting at the sea, watching a slow motion of our crazy lives sailing by. With his former works (Era/Area, Off-Record 2017 and NGC 1999, les albums Claus 2018), Ben toured in Belgium, France and Netherlands (Meakusma Festival, Ancienne Belgique, Le Lieu Unique, BRDCST Festival, Schiev Festival, Le Guess Who?, World Minimal Music Festival). His next album will be released in February 2020 in collaboration with Stroom and les albums claus. Mary Hurrell is a Bristol-based vocalist and composer creating immersive, visceral soundscapes that fuse voice, electronic textures and heavy beats. Her debut album FORMATIONS (2024) explores the voice as a site of transformation, weaving intimate and expansive sonic worlds.
