STRYDA’S SUFFERAH’S CHOICE - 30 YEARS OF ROOTS & DUB

Since first taking to the airwaves as a teenager in 1996, Stryda’s Sufferah’s Choice radio show has been a vital force in Bristol’s Roots & Dub scene.

Born on the city’s pirate airwaves of both Ragga and Passion FM, with records smuggled into studios hidden among tower blocks and derelict buildings, the show offered a rare window into undiluted Roots and Dub music in the pre-internet era. Cassette recordings of broadcasts were passed from hand to hand, helping the Sufferah’s Choice become an underground institution within the UK roots community.

When the show moved online, its reach became global, connecting long-time cassette traders and new listeners around the world. Around a decade ago, Stryda made the move from pirate to legal broadcasting, helping erect the SWU FM mast on one of the very same tower blocks from which he had once transmitted.

Today, the Sufferah’s Choice continues to champion grassroots labels and the latest vinyl releases, with exclusive test presses from across the globe always maintaining its original spirit while reaching a now worldwide audience.

For this special celebration, Stryda will be bringing out a selection of classic test presses, favourite releases and some serious dubplate pressure from across his three decades on air. Joining him at the wheels of steel is a longtime supporter of the radio programme and true sound system legend, the mighty Aba Shanti-I! Powering this event is none other than Bristol's infamous QSS who will be wheeling in the speaker stacks to make sure this night is as heavyweight as you'd expect!
