MC Yallah & Debmaster + ThisisDA at Strange Brew
Headfirst Editor's Pick

"If you caught MC Yallah and Debmaster their last time in Bristol then you already know what’s up. Highlight of the year contender, the Nyege Nyege Tapes rapper brings her multilingual, potent, frenetic flow bolstered by a bedrock of glitched-out, searing beats courtesy of the Debmaster. A no-brainer. "

This Kenya-born, Uganda-raised rapper is capable of high-speed rhymes in Luganda, Luo, Kiswahili, and English, sometimes keeping pace with 300 bpm singeli beats - a spectacle which simply has to be seen to be believed.

MC Yallah is a Kenyan rapper based in Uganda, and an affiliate of Nyege Nyege. Together with the wildly diverse producer Debmaster, they bring the fire to the floor.

Kenyan by heritage, but born and raised in Kampala, where she is a key member of the big Nyege Nyege crew, dazzling rapper MC Yallah has been on the hip-hop scene for nearly 20 years.

A combination of conscious and futuristic hip-hop, grime, punk and trap, her signature style is the rare, rapid and tightly controlled flow delivered in one or more languages (Kiswahili, Luganda, English and Luo). Fierce and intense, the lyrics draw from real-life experiences and often address women’s issues spreading a powerful message of integrity and self-determination.

Her first Hakuna Kulala 11-tracker "Kubali" album, with demented productions by Debmaster was featured in The Wire's top 50 records of 2019, followed by her recent EP with electronic artist Eomac on Phantom Limb 2021. "Yallah Beibe", Her second full-length album with Debmaster is due in April on Hakuna Kulala.

"On their own, Debmaster's glitched-out productions provide charged beats and a surplus of hyperactive energy. Fortified with a voice as captivating as Kenya’s MC Yallah and you've got Kubali, a fierce example of how rap and dance music communities can join forces to push each other forward." — FACT
