A
gig
held at The Be-Bop Club
on Friday 14th December. The event starts at 20:30.
Canadian tenor saxophonist Terry Quinney has played at the club quite a few times with Sound of Blue Note and Ray D’Inverno’s quintet. This new project finds Terry playing tunes associated with sax great Stan Getz. Whilst probably best known for the bossa nova album Getz/Gilberto, Stan Getz had a long and varied career. Starting out with the big bands of Stan Kenton and Woody Herman, he could play fast be-bop tunes effortlessly, with a light and airy sound that became associated with the West Coast, alongside other players such as Art Pepper and Chet Baker. In the late 60s and early 70s he made some much more contemporary sounding albums such as Sweet Rain and Captain Marvel alongside pianist Chick Corea, and players such as Ron Carter, Stanley Clarke and Tony Williams. For this tribute Terry is joined by first-rate pianist Phil Doyle, who is also a member of Sound of Blue Note and plays for the Joe Loss Orchestra. Bristol stalwarts Will Harris – bass and Andy Hague – drums complete the line-up.
