daoud - trumpet, Dan Newberry - tenor sax, Dorian Childs-Prophet - piano, Nick Kacal - bass, Paul Archibald - drums
daoud is a trumpet player, record producer, mixer, songwriter and composer based in France - he visited the UK last year for a short tour which produced some very well received gigs. For tonight's appearance performing his own compositions he his joined in the front-line by Dan Newberry on sax, a favourite at the club whose mature playing belies his youthful appearance.
daoud has worked with the likes of Pokey Lafarge, Tonina Saputo, Violent Femmes, Dave King, M.A. Beat, Smitten, Free Nelson Mandoomjazz, José Padilla, developing #1 records, performing in over 20 countries and producing records across genres for record labels such as Concord Music, Rounder Records and Black Milk Music.
Saxophonist Dan Newberry is currently studying for a Masters at the Royal Welsh College and is one of the brightest rising stars of the scene. He studied with sax great Iain Ballamy from an early age, and has acquired an appreciation of all styles of jazz sax, able to switch from 30s swing to the most contemporary sounds in an instant.
It's first time at the club for pianist Dorian Childs-Prophet, a graduate of Birmingham Conservatoire who is active in Bristol's new wave of jazz/club crossover bands, performing in Dundundun and Zoobers alongside vibraphonist Harriet Riley.
Bassist Nick Kacal has previously lived in Manchester and London, but has now relocated to South Wales. He frequently tours with pianist Dom Pipkin.
It's also first time at the club for drummer Paul Archibald, who teaches as part of the post-graduate programme at Bristol's BIMM music college. Although playing regularly within the roots scene in the UK, Paul's experimental project 'Free Nelson Mandoomjazz' is currently signed to Rare Noise Records and has recently performed at OctLoft festival in China and JazzFest Berlin, where he was billed alongside jazz legend Benny Golson.
