Nick Tomalin's 'Shades of Shearing' is dedicated to the musical legacy of iconic British-born jazz pianist George Shearing. The band features the same line-up as his classic quintet with vibraphone and guitar.
The performance will celebrate the distinctive sound of the classic Shearing Quintet as well as highlighting the work of this influential and important British pianist, whose fame came to the fore when he settled in the US in the late 40s. The repertoire includes Shearing’s best known compositions including ‘Lullaby of Birdland’ and ‘September in the Rain’ but also features some of Shearing’s slightly less familiar tunes and arrangements.
Nick Tomalin is one of the most in demand jazz piano players on the London scene. Over his thirty year career his swinging, tasteful bebop-rooted style has made him the favourite accompanist for many of the capitol's best musicians including Jim Mullen, Mark Lockheart, Stan Sulzmann, Alan Barnes and many others.
The group features prominently the vibraphone of Nat Steele, a London based player who has achieved international recognition and who has recently released an album alongside US sax legend Scott Hamilton.
Long term club supporters may remember bassist Dominic Howles, originally from Bristol. Dominic started his career in the Tommy Chase band alongside Ben Waghorn in the early 90s, and has since then become a stalwart of the London scene.
