James Chadwick - guitar, Nick Malcolm - trumpet, Henrik Jensen - bass, Andy Hague - drums
Guitarist James Chadwick approaches his music in a distinctive and thoughtful way, blending ever evolving melodic lines with inventive and measured harmonic treatment. He is an excellent guitarist who eschews flashy technical runs and makes standard tunes sound very fresh by leaving space and using unexpected textures. It's probably fair to say that his biggest influence is USA guitar legend Bill Frisell.
"He is quite distinctive -he's guaranteed interest" - The Penguin Guide to Jazz (8th edition). “Fresh and quirky” - Jazz FM, "Melodic and Experimental nu-jazz guitarist" - The Guardian.
Tonight's programme will include several Thelonious Monk tunes alongside some carefully selected standards.
Trumpeter Nick Malcolm should prove the perfect foil to James' guitar playing. A versatile performer in any style Nick can be heard playing blistering hard-bop in the Jazz Defenders through to completely improvised free jazz. You can check out Nick's own music on Bandcamp here.
Henrik Jensen – double bass. Originally from Denmark, Henrik was based in London from 1997 but has recently relocated to Frome from where he is now picking up a lot of work in the South West. He appears in our autumn programme several times with various groups, and also as band leader with his own Followed By Thirteen.
Andy Hague is well known as both a drummer and trumpeter on the Bristol jazz scene.
