Paul Dunmall's massive sound on saxophone and melodic sensibility has always demonstrated the influence of John Coltrane on his playing and he makes this debt even more explicit in this duo with drummer Tony Bianco whose own rolling, polyrhythmic excursions and free-time explorations are descended from both Elvin Jones and Rashied Ali. In 2012 Paul and Tony debut release'Thank you to Coltrane' was a stunning tribute to the music and spirit of John Cotrane. This superb CD was followed by the equally mesmerising 'Tribute To Coltrane' which was released earlier this year and now Paul and Tony have decided to take their duo format out of the studio and perform live. Fringe Jazz on 21st November will be only the 3rd time that the duo have performed this material in front of an audience. This is going to be a very special night - make sure you don't miss it.
PAUL DUNMALL / saxophone
For thirty years Paul Dunmall has carved out a reputation for himself and is now widely recognised as one of the most uncompromising and talented reed players on the International jazz/improvised music scene. Whether playing in small groups or big bands his musical sensitivity and imagination combined with a powerful sound make him one of the most distinctive improvisers playing today. His octet and Moksha big band showcases his abilities both as a composer drenched in the Jazz traditions and Folk traditions and as a sympathetic leader able to give maximum freedom to a elite group of fellow improvisers.
He has performed with Alice Coltrane, Rashied Ali, Andrew Cyrille, Henry Grimes, Elton Dean, Keith Tippett, Mujician, Johnny Guitar Watson, Danny Thompson, LJCO, Chris Corsano, Andy Sheppard, Spirit Level and many more...
"I think what's actually happened in free improvisation...there's nothing that's barred. We want to use it all. We want everything. We want melody, we want time, we want abstraction, we want no time, we want the whole package so that you are truly free to play what you want. " " - Paul Dunmall interview in AllAboutJazz
TONY BIANCO / drums
Tony Bianco grew up in New York City where he experienced the greats of jazz first hand - Mingus, Tony Williams, Elvin Jones - and fell in love with the music. In the early 90s he relocated to Berlin and got involved in the free scene there and playing with Alexander Von Schlippenbach, Aki Takase, Gerd Dudek and Reggie Workman. In the mid 90s he moved to London and hooked up with Paul Dunmall, Loz Speyer, Elton Dean, Dave Liebman, Paul Rutherford and many more.
"Dunmall's playing is utterly fantastic. His precise tone is roughed up and emotive at times and clear and determined at others. His melodies and ideas are well formed and constantly in motion. Without repeating himself or playing out any one idea too long, he builds his lines with wily intensity. Bianco rounds out the sound space with vibrant fills and microscopic reactions to the saxophonist's twists, turns and torrential runs. The platform he creates for his partner's improvizations is empathetic, kinetic and driving ... a conversation between two masterful musicians and an electricfying tribute at the same time.
