Rose Io (Eye Oh) is Brighton-based writer, musician and visual artist who makes mysterious, gem-like and sometimes darkly humorous songs inspired by wind-up toys, automata, the paranormal, dreams, visions and her lived experiences. Rose now presents her forthcoming LP ‘Autumn Automaton’, due for release via Brighton label MIOHMI Records. Co-produced by Ruby Taylor (Yumi and the Weather), ‘Autumn Automaton’ was born out of a period of profound emotional crisis. In making this album, Rose was rebuilding herself, as if she were assembling an automaton body. Every word and note was a cog carefully positioned to restart her heart, and each song is a part of the mechanism which brings the automaton to life.
The album represents a gradual progression towards re-establishing her sense of identity and purpose. Rose created the music to reflect this concept, composing songs reminiscent of clockwork toys, kaleidoscopic patterns and the hazy memories of childhood. Her songwriting is frequently inspired by a love of visual art, particularly outsider art, mediumistic art, folk art and surrealism, as evidenced by ‘Night Music’, a track inspired by the art work ‘Eine Kleine Nachtmusik’, by surrealist painter Dorothea Tanning. The simple yet profound lyrical and musical content of the album brings to mind William Blake’s book ‘The Marriage of Heaven and Hell.’ Rose’s lyrics reveal a vivid personal fantasy world, as in the case of ‘The Necromancer’, with its nod to the deliciously dark folk tales of Angela Carter, or a Victorian gothic romance after the style of Edgar Allen Poe. Musically, there are elements of Syd Barrett and The Space Lady, but ultimately, the album is singularly idiosyncratic. ‘Autumn Automaton’ reflects a truly original and anomalous voice in the realm of contemporary psychedelic and folk music.
Vodka Terry isn’t really a ladder salesman but a self taught jazz harpist called Alice with honest, dark comedy lyrics, dainty chin and massive tits.
Regina Collage & Cameron Smith is an experimental Bristol based duo. Noisy and minimalistic synth music inspired by Kraut rock and Casio-tone sounds. Tired- avantpop with too much reverb on the vocal.
