Hellfire Video Club are parachuting in this month with a reprise blast from the past. We aren’t normally keen on repeating ourselves, but John Boorman’s ‘Zardoz’ holds a special place in the Hellfire canon, being one of our very first screenings, all the way back in a different time zone (2011). Now celebrating its 50th birthday (!), and with the world very slowly becoming more receptive to its charms – it feels like it may be a good time to give this bonkers epic another big screen airing.
Zardoz is set in a future where folk worship a floating giant stone head that dispenses grain. The world is overseen by a group of bored ‘immortals’ who preserve the achievements of humanity whilst living forever and going slowly insane. Enter savage killer Sean Connery, here to...hmmmmmmmm. We weren’t sure how to accurately synopsize the plot back then in 2011, and I don’t know if we can do it now either. You can look it up if you want. Or you can just come and go along with the ride. Let’s just say it’s one of the all-time great anomalies of movie history from an age where major studios *just occasionally* agreed to fund deeply eccentric visions with no regard to commerciality. So whether it’s your first time or you fancy a reacquaintance, come along, dive in and get lost in the madness. Maybe by 2035 we’ll all be flying around in giant stone heads.
