Raph Clarkson is a trombonist, improviser, composer / arranger & workshop leader; his guiding principle is the power in music to form connections in community and collaboration.
For tonight's ensemble of brilliant players all with their own highly original outlets, expect a mix of groove-based tunes, uplifting melodies, wild improvisation and contemplative musical meditations all drawn from Raph's various projects including The Dissolute Society and the South African / U.K. collaborative project, Equal Spirits. His music explores childhood, human connection and introspective reflection. Raph has an inviting, open spirit and his playing and approach celebrates loved ones, mentors and musical inspirations.
Raph is noted as one of the rising stars of the U.K. improv scene, celebrated by Verity Sharp of BBC Radio 3's Late Junction and applauded by Adrian Pallant of London Jazz News for his ability to create 'challenging but engaging music' of deep feeling with openness and experimentation.
His energetic & open approach has seen Raph play widely: he leads The Dissolute Society, RESOLUTE & Equal Spirits alongside horn arrangements for Isaac Birituro & The Rail Abandon, a Ghana / U.K. collaboration whose latest album was released to critical acclaim on the Wah Wah 45s record label. He has also featured on albums by Laura Jurd, Overground Collective & WorldService Project. Raph has also been commissioned to write music for Sinfonia Viva (Derby, U.K.), the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Spitalfields Music, Engines Orchestra and Mid Wales Music Trust. As workshop leader he has played an active role in education projects for a variety of organisations in the U.K. including Travelling Light Theatre (Bristol), Mindful Music, Kazzum Arts, Glyndebourne Opera and the London Sinfonietta.
This show as Raph's Bristol Six is a way of saying hello to the city he now calls home and celebrating its rich musical landscape. Everyone is warmly invited to share in this playful, creative evening.
