Get your new year off to a flying start with this landmark 60s wuxia flick from master of the genre King Hu.
A lonely outpost in the middle of a desert near the border seems like the perfect place for some ne'er do wells to execute a bit of political chicanery which will allow their boss to assume the mantle of emperor. However, their plans are foiled when a mysterious band of fighters seek to exact justice through a demonstration of exceptional fighting skills.
A ballet of martial arts which took Taiwan and the Chinese diaspora by storm, Dragon Inn re-wrote the rule-book for an entire genre, inspiring imitators aplenty and influencing everyone from John Woo to Quentin Tarantino along the way. Now over 50 years old, the sparse setting and lean cinematic language still looks freshly minted, and could teach modern action directors a trick or two.
