Your land and mine goes down into a darkness now, and I, and all the other guardians of her flame are driven from our home up out into the wolf’s jaw. But the flame still flickers in the fen."
Rarely screened and often whispered-about, Penda's Fen (1974) was part of the BBC's A Play For Today series which also birthed Mike Leigh's classic class tragedy Abigail's Party. It is an inscrutable and beautifully written and acted journey to the vibrant pagan heart of England, a hauntological masterpiece of criss-crossed personalities, histories, desires and sensibilities. Stephen's prudish and elitist worldview, the very embodiment of establishment England, is broken apart piece by piece in a true initiation into the mysteries of this land.
