The debut film from former hip-hop producer D Smith, Kokomo City is a candid and intimate look at the lives of four black trans sex workers living in Atlanta and New York. Bursting with energy and a brash visual style, Smith's film meets the rawness of their subjects' lives with a lightness of touch which, while at times irreverent and provocative, never shies away from the serious issues lying at the heart of the central characters' lives. An incisive exploration of race, gender and sexuality, the film is made all the more poignant by the fact that one of the featured subjects - Koko Da Doll - was shot and fatally wounded in Atlanta earlier this year.
