A
event
held at The Cube
on Sunday 25th January. The event starts at 12:00.
A mysterious stranger undertakes to destroy a feudal lord who committed an unspeakable wrong in this astonishing samurai classic - considered by some to be a dark-horse candidate for the greatest Japanese film of all time.
Of all Masaki Kobayashi’s attacks on the cruelty and inhumanity perpetrated by authoritarian power (including The Human Condition and Samurai Rebellion), perhaps none are more brilliant than his visceral, mesmerising Harakiri.
In a magnificent performance, Tatsuya Nakadai (Yojimbo, The Face of Another, Ran) stars as Hanshiro Tsugumo, a masterless samurai (rōnin) who enters the manor of Lord Iyi, requesting to commit ritual suicide on his property. Suspected of simply fishing for charity, Hanshiro is told the gruesome tale of the last rōnin who made the same request. But there's more to Hanshiro's story than he's letting on...
With its intricate structure and pressure-cooker atmosphere, Kobayashi’s film is a full-scale demolition job of samurai ideals and feudal hypocrisy, filmed with artistry and surgical precision, and scored by celebrated composer Toru Takemitsu.
Covid Care
To keep everyone safe, FFP2 (or better) masks are required for all at this event, unless you are exempt.
You don’t need to disclose your barrier to wearing a mask if you’re exempt; however, if you are able to wear a mask, you will be doing so for the benefit of the whole group - including attendees who are unable to wear a mask.
We will provide FFP2 masks to anyone who needs one on arrival. Please bring your own if you are able to.
Please do not attend if you have a new cough, sore throat, fever or if you have other symptoms of any kind of contagious illness.
The event will be 50% capacity at most.
Ventilation in The Cube auditorium replaces the air in an hour.
Why are we requiring masks?
We are currently in a flu and Covid surge and we are requiring masks to protect each other - particularly those most likely to be impacted as Long Covid and the harms of flu affect marginalised people at the highest rates. We want to make The Cube more accessible to people who are currently shut out of public spaces due to a lack of airborne virus mitigations.
Good quality (FFP2) masks are the best way to protect each other from airborne viruses such as Covid, flu and colds. These illnesses are often spread before symptoms start so we need protections such as masks in addition to staying home when sick.
We keep us safe!
Other Access Info
The Cube is regrettably not wheelchair accessible - there are many steps required to enter the building and to get between the different levels inside.
We have gender neutral toilets and a disabled toilet.
Free tickets are available for personal assistants. Email: [email protected] if you’d like to book one of these tickets.
