Information:

A double bill screening of Difficult Love (2010) and Beyond There's Always A Black Issue Dear (2018) followed by a Q&A curated by Kiki and Queer Vision.

“Difficult Love provides a glimpse into Muholi’s life and the lives, loves, and struggles of other black lesbians in South Africa” Autostraddle (2012).

A film with a highly personal take on the challenges facing black lesbians in South Africa through the life, work, friends and associates of 'visual activist' and celebrated photographer, Zanele Muholi. It explores how class, race and sexuality are linked within the black woman’s experience. Muholi fearlessly uses her camera to raise awareness, change perceptions and generate an understanding of the importance of lesbian rights.

Beyond There's Always A Black Issue Dear - “A real treasure trove of London’s LGBTQ cultural history with untold stories where 1970’s Soul, Disco and Punks met in underground clubs” QueerGuru (2020)

From photographer and filmmaker Claire Lawrie, this vibrant documentary is a timely exploration of the role black British Londoners played in the LGBT+ movement and how their voices and experiences have often been airbrushed out of Queer history. From ballet dancing schoolboys to make-up wearing gender-fluid school days, their experiences shed new light on the UK in the 1970s/80s. Characters vividly recall daring to be different in expressing their own identities – these are the untold stories.
