A journey to the outer limits of sound.
PAUL STAPLETON AND SIMON ROSE
Paul Stapleton (bonsai sound sculpture) and Simon Rose (alto and baritone saxophones) are sonic adventurers in free improvisation. Their collaboration is documented on FAUNA (2013) an LP from pfMENTUM.
The Bonsai Sound Sculpture (BoSS) is a portable modular musical instrument (Paul Stapleton and Neil Fawcett, 2010) combining a repurposed turntable, DIY electronics, amplified metallic percussion and strings.
" like some old, forgotten animal from the beginning of time,
silence towers above all the puny world of noise; but as a living
animal, not an extinct species, it lies in wait, and we can still see its broad back sinking ever deeper among the briers and bushes of the world of noise. It is as though this pre-historic creature were gradually sinking into the depths of its own silence. And yet sometimes all of the world today seems like the mere buzzing of insects on the broad back of silence. "
Max Picard (1989)
SHIBBY SHITEGEIST & DAVE MCKEOWN
Shibby Shitegeist is the nom-de-jeux employed by an aural manipulator and facilitator of personal somatic practice. Translation: Shibby Shitegeist is a DJ. This is not her real name.
Shibby's mixes are often erratic in style and mood, inspired by the pleasure she finds in stark contrasts, whether it's textual and rhythmic differences, or the shift from light and quirky to dark and moody. She likes to think of this approach as"juxto-techno".
Shibby has played across Europe and North America, previously put out tracks on Doma Musique, Coal, and DeepSquare, and is set to release on BleepSequence, Make Mistakes and Deca Rhythm in 2014. She co-hosts Plymouth's Subheavy Radio Show alongside Necta Selecta and Appleblim, and co-founded the DANZSHLAG nomadic minimal techno party.
Dave Mckeown is a multi-instrumentalist whose declared purpose in life is to play every style of music on the planet. He is currently stuck at country & western and is circumventing the problem by moving sideways into juxto-jazz-techno. Primarily a saxophonist, he has played gigs everywhere from the top of Snowdon the mean streets of Vancouver and a sleazy cinema in Tel Aviv.
There will be a prize available after the performance to the first member of the audience to spot the musical quote from Phantom of the Opera.

At the moment she is recording an LP, Circea, and she will soon publish a 7' split with Hedoromeruhen (the duo of Daisuke Ichiba (Le dernier cri) and Yasutoshi Yoshida (Gouvernment Alpha). She also co-runs the"nerd constellation superfutur" cassette label zamzamrec and the FAGradio programme, both devoted to sound and exploratory music.
DOMINIC LASH AND SETH COOKE
Double bassist Dominic Lash is one of the best respected improvisers of his generation, currently resident in Bristol. He's played with John Butcher, Evan Parker, Chris Corsano, Tony Conrad, Steve Reid, Angharad Davies, Rhodri Davies, etc. etc. etc... Known equally for firey free jazz and modern composition-inspired reductionism. "His range is just about unrivalled" (The Watchful Ear); "explosive bass-strumming" (The Guardian); "dextrous bass playing teems with energy" (Nightshift).
Described by radio free midwich as a'musician and improviser of rare talent, writer and co-curator of essential web-resource Bang the Bore', Seth Cooke's improvisation utilises the percussive and resonant qualities of a sawn-off stainless steel waste disposal sink alongside assorted electronics and implements. He is also an active field recordist although it might be more accurate to describe his current activity as non-field recording and runs the Every Contact Leaves a Trace label. Dom and Seth have been playing together irregularly since January 2013.
