Tropical Malady, the early masterpiece of Palme D’Or-winning Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Memoria; Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives), celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
Keng, a soldier stationed in rural northern Thailand, begins a tentative courtship with a factory worker, Tong. Later, the film shapeshifts from a tender, naturalistic romance to an almost wordless metaphysical folktale, as we follow Keng on a hunt for the spirit of a tiger shaman, deep into the belly of the jungle.
Enigmatic and mercurial, the film has become known for its bold two-part structure. Winner of the 2004 Cannes Jury Prize, Tropical Malady is an essential piece of Asian queer cinema which explores the untameable mysteries of desire, sexuality and the more-than-human.
