A event held at The Cube on Tuesday 9th June. The event starts at 20:00.
For Pride Month 2026, we're going back to the nineties, the decade that brought the queer community both joy (New Queer Cinema, the growth of direct action movements) and pain (the height of the AIDS epidemic and the continuing homophobic backlash against queer liberation). We're exploring the scuzzy-sexy underbelly of the decade with four modern queer classics.
We launch our 90s Queer Sleaze season with this coming-of-age classic, a painfully hilarious depiction of growing up queer in a shit town.
Fucking Åmål (released overseas as Show Me Love), tells the story of awkward small-town teenager Agnes and her crush on popular classmate Elin, which unexpectedly blossoms into real-life romance; it was quickly heralded as a new queer cinema touchstone and one of the most authentic portrayals of youthful relationships on film.
The film was an international arthouse success, and a veritable sensation in Sweden, reputedly selling more tickets than the previous year's Titanic. None other than Ingmar Bergman called it "a young master's first masterpiece", while a rising 19-year-old singer by the name of Robyn provided the closing credit music, making this an all-time Swedish cultural touchstone.
For anyone who grew up in the nineties, Fucking Åmål will take you back to a time when the fashion was questionable, the music indisputable, and the homophobia unavoidable - but when all of a sudden, all your queer dreams could come true.
Doors open 30 minutes before advertised start time. All film screenings are ad-free and 18+ unless otherwise stated, and start with no more than a 10 min selection of trailers.
The Cube is a membership venue, please remember to bring your card. You can join on the door for £1.
