Chapter 7, Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer

As the global construction of data centres further degrades and depletes water, air and nature, September 2026’s chapter of THIS IS NOT A BOOKCLUB presents Robin Wall Kimmerer’s, Braiding Sweetgrass.

In 2013 Robin Wall Kimmerer offered ‘a braid of stories’ woven from botany, indigenous knowledge and science, that sought ‘to heal our relationship with the world’.

“The scent of sweetgrass will make you remember things you didn’t know you’d forgotten…”
Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass

Kimmerer, a citizen of the Potawatomi native American nation, drew from their creation myth of Skywoman. This celestial Goddess fell to earth carrying a handful of sweetgrass. Then with help from the animal kingdom, Skywoman seeded the natural world.

There is such tenderness in braiding the hair of someone you love”
Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass

Inspired by Skywoman’s instinctive community centred approach, THIS IS NOT A BOOKCLUB remembers the real women who value, replenish and commune respectfully with Skywoman’s creation.
