Frankie Armstrong & Brecht at The Folk House
£6/ £8

A gig held at Bristol Folk House on Friday 27th September. The event starts at 20:00.

Folk legend Frankie Armstrong & Mikey Price come to Bristol for a special performance of the songs of Bertolt Brecht, Kurt Weill & Hans Eisler.

The material covered draws on the album Armstrong recorded with the late Dave Van Ronk in 1993, Let No One Deceive You, which is being re-released on Armstrong's own Pirate Jenny label.

Brecht & Weill's songs, which burst with political conviction, passion and defiance, were made for Armstrong's uncompromising voice, whose ability to carry tenderness and strength in the same breath is extraordinary.

The evening will include interpretations of many well known Brecht songs, such as'Mack the Knife, ' 'Pirate Jenny' & 'Alabama Song', as well as songs you are yet to discover.

Reviews:

'Armstrong ... brings controlled rage and gentle force to Brecht's words; her performance is exquisite'

'The anger, tenderness, humour and other emotions Brecht intended for these songs is explicit in these interpretations.....Every song is a perfect wedding of words, music and performance. '

'Challenging, harsh and beautiful...a truly successful interpretation of the genius of Bertolt Brecht. '

Biography of Frankie Armstrong:

Frankie Armstrong began singing with the skiffle boom in 1957, moving through the British folk song revival of the early 1960s. She studied, performed and recorded with leading figures of the folk revival such as Louis Killen, Ewan MacColl and Bert Lloyd. With Peggy Seeger and Sandra Kerr, she researched and developed The Female Frolic (1966) for live performance and a recording, which began her particular interest in women's lives as illuminated through song.

Since 1962, she has built up a repertoire of British songs and ballads, which, along with contemporary British songs, still form the basis of her musical vocabulary. Armstrong's repertoire consists of rural, industrial, music hall and contemporary songs - her own and those of other songwriters such as Sandra Kerr, Leon Rosselson and Bertolt Brecht.
