Introduction to Vertical Gardening at Bristol Folk House
£64 full fee, concessions available

A event held at Bristol Folk House on Saturday 23rd September. The event starts at 10:00.

Join Alex Patience, a landscape architect and vertical garden specialist, for a day workshop understanding the principles of vertical gardening (living or greenwalls). In the morning we will explore the history and development of vertical gardening systems, from pre-history right up to modern day developments.

We will look at different systems, irrigation design, the differences between hydroponic and soil-based media, plant species, soil and microbial interactions, as well as looking into how different developments around the world have adapted designs for different climates. Understanding key materials used, the horticultural requirements of the plants, and the sustainability implications of certain systems will all be explored. Alex being an independent designer who has worked with all the major suppliers in the UK, a critical eye will be cast on the embodied carbon and lifecycle of plastics within vertical garden systems available commercially.

In the afternoon will follow a practical workshop at The Bristol Folk Houses own vertical gardening living easel, designed for teaching practical skills about best practice in vertical gardening, and understanding how to adapt materials for DIY applications. We will explore the system build-up and construction, irrigation design and installation, planting media and soil composition, planting and species selection, as well as practical considerations such as care during high summer and winter. We will plant a few species, investigate the growth of species that have already established in the vertical garden, and go through a break-down of the materiality of the systems used so they can be emulated at home.

Student testimonial:

The course was very comprehensive including history, future developments, material choice, DIY and practicals. I liked that there was a lot of critical analysis about the advantages and disadvantages of different techniques.
