“A saxophone delivery as persuasive as a speaking voice”
- Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD
Jazz at The Greenbank presents a very special one-off concert, showcasing internationally acclaimed Saxophonist Jon Lloyd. He brings his renowned European Quartet, performing compositions from his hit record "Earth Songs" (over 1.5m streams worldwide).
"His tunes are steeped in the ECM aesthetic, and he and long-time collaborator John Law on piano make it sound like the only music you ever want to hear."
- Jon Turney, London Jazz News, 2023
Jon has been part of the UK jazz and free music scene for several decades, recording albums on HatOlogy, Leo, FMR, 33 and Ubuntu with musicians including Paul Rogers, Mark Sanders, John Law, Phil Wachsmann, Marcio Mattos, Stan Adler, Paul Clarvis, Tom Farmer and Asaf Sirkis.
He has now turned his attention to European contemporary jazz; using classical and non-western music influences as well as jazz sources to write vibrant, melodic and emotionally direct new jazz compositions.
The quartet also comprises the virtuosic John Law (Congregation, Re-Creations, Art of Sound Trio with Yuri Golubev, Asaf Sirkis) on piano, and Alex Goodyear (Yetii, Simon Spillett, Re-Creations, Jake McMurchie) on drums. The wonderful Ashley John Long will be filling the bass chair for Nick Pini during tonight's concert.
" An accomplished album of many highlights... characterised by emotion and beauty... offering inventive textures, dynamics shifts and a touch of magic."
