Intermediate Pattern Cutting & Garment Construction Course

8 weeks - Daytimes 10.15 a.m – 2.45 p.m (booking below - September 2026)
15 week - Evening course 6.15 p.m – 8.30 p.m (planned for January 2027)

Course Content:

This course covers a broad range of garments such as jackets, coats, shirts, dresses and trousers and elements of those garments including sleeves, collars, pockets, facings and linings. It builds on the skills introduced during the Beginners Pattern Cutting course and includes making either a full scale garment in final fabric or a full scale fully finished toile in calico (depending on your garment construction skills and/or the complexity of your final garment).

It is split into two parts. The first builds on skills and techniques introduced in the Beginners Pattern Cutting course and introduces other garments and elements of those listed above.  During the second part you will put your skills to use in the production a full scale final garment. You will produce blocks, half and full scale draft patterns, final patterns, toiles and/or finished garments , depending on the complexity of your garment.  Toiles are often just made to check the pattern and fit before completing in a final fabric and do not include pockets, facings, linings etc. However, if you lack confidence or ability in garment construction you can complete a more fully finished toile to practice all or some of the sewing techniques. You will be encouraged to produce work appropriate for your personal skills level to complete a garment that both builds your confidence and challenges you.

The patterns you produce can be made and fitted to your own measurements or a standard size.

Everything you need is provided including calico but you will need to provide fabric for your final garment. You can choose and select fabric after the start of the course.

Course Level:

This course is aimed at students who have completed the full beginners pattern cutting course (or both of the short pattern cutting courses) at The Island.
