QUEERING MASCULINITY at The Island
See event details

A event held at The Island on Thursday 10th November. The event starts at 11:00.

Brook Tate and Daniel DeWolfe present an exhibition of artworks focusing on the male body through a queered lens. Having both grown up as Jehovah's Witnesses with a shared experience of suppressed queerness, their art serves as a vehicle to process their past and redefine their perspective.
EVENT INCLUDES:
* Monday - Opening:
The doors of Queering Masculinity at The Island Gallery open to the public - the gallery abounds with visual work reflecting on the ‘male’ form and how art can explore and challenge notions of gender performance, intimacy and armour today. Projections of Daniel’s digital workflow paired with ambient digital soundscapes are on show in the dark room annex. Brook and Daniel layer their artworks with live music performances that re-contextualise their traditional pieces - Brook performs as Debra the Drag Zebra; Daniel transforms into Drawn by DeWolfe, an alias plucked from his sketchbooks and landing in the gallery with alien impact.
* Tuesday - Meet the Artists Q&A and Discussion:
Spend an evening with us discussing the things that have shaped our lives and how these have influenced our creative practices - explore the ways that faith, queerness and suppression can stand as obstacles but how these can be overcome and transformed into artistic fuel. We will be telling our stories, and would love to hear yours to. We'd love to encourage you to bring your artwork too and join the discussion... Sharing is caring
* Wednesday - Brook Tate Performance Workshop:
Join Brook as he guides you through an interactive performance workshop to discover your inner musical beast. Experience the magic of a quiet hum with Gayle the Whale, a full throated roar with Bryan the Lion, and the shameless fabulousness of Debra the Zebra - Free / Pay What You Can
* Thursday - Draw like DeWolfe Workshop:
Daniel explains his distortionist approach to portraiture and conveys the basic techniques he employs to map faces and conjure up otherworldly characters - bring your sketchbook, iPad, or whatever other drawing medium you enjoy - including both traditional and digital demonstrations and tutorials. Expand your perception of the human face and leave with your own surreal creations - £5
