THE KING CHAMELEON + ZENA at The Lanes
Headfirst Editor's Pick

"Free entry! Dilla-worthy breaks, grooves and languid guitar lines bumping together in a dusty atmosphere of downbeat jazz-funk / boom-bap soul-stirrers. Guaranteed blunted beauty inside FFO: Surprise Chef, Khruangbin, BADBADNOTGOOD, The Heliocentrics."

THE KING CHAMELEON • www.instagram.com/thekingchameleon_98

The King Chameleon is a fusion jazz group inspired and personified by a range of styles, sounds and concepts. Founded upon the lofi beats of producer Vivek Varia, this newly formed band seeks to both maintain and expand such sounds into the realms of experimentation and improvisation. Following success through editorial playlist placements on both Spotify and Apple Music, as well as being scouted by A&R Apple Music subsidiary Platoon, the group are set to release their debut EP “Forever”, a journey of sounds from disco and house (Forever) to samba and bossa nova (Sad Dream), rnb and dub (Dreaming of You) & psychedelic rock (Underwater). This release, alongside their debut live session at Bristol’s Jam Jar, demonstrates the grandiose of their desire for sonical freedom, as well as their chemistry and individual talent as musicians.

ZENA • www.instagram.com/zenaaaahmed

Fusing the sounds of folk and neo-soul with sharp, relatable lyrics, ZENA is an exciting fresh talent on the South West music scene.

Growing up as part of a musical family with eclectic tastes, and participating in choirs and groups throughout her youth, ZENA finds power in connecting with audiences through performance. Her songs touch on a range of themes from childhood and heartbreak, to politics and society.

Inspired by artists such as Erykah Badu, Amy Winehouse, Fiona Apple and Lianne La Havas, ZENA has worked hard to develop a strong and distinctive vocal with lyrics that meditate on girlhood, womanhood and survival. She has performed at a variety of festivals across the South West including Valley Fest and Sidmouth Folk Festival, and venues in Bristol such as The Fleece, Crofter’s Rights, and The Crown.
