"Sell out warning! Wonky London supergroup Y have ruffled Windmill scene feathers with their fresh strain of scuzzy, sax-fuelled art-rock, riddled with Talking Heads/Roxy Music-style rhythms and sophistosleaze. Catch ‘em in the thick of it with twitchy indie-psych from ELLiS.D and Horsefair’s potent post-rock convulsions."

gig
held at The Lanes
on Sunday 1st February. The event starts at 20:00.
Emerging from the creative crucible of London, Y is a genre-defying band founded in 2023 by Adam Brennan and Sophie Coppin during a period of isolation. The duo discovered an uncanny synergy in their music-making, blending shared tastes with contrasting stylistic approaches. This paradox birthed the eclectic, unpredictable sound that defines Y—playfully described as “wonk rock,” “Gameboy thrash,” and even “Egyptian wedding music.”
The band’s lineup amplifies this kaleidoscopic sound. Sophie (vocals, keys) grounds the group’s intricate arrangements with her untrained yet instinctual knack for crafting irresistibly cheeky hooks. Adam (vocals, guitar) injects a sense of experimentalism, drawing from Japanese jazz fusion and unconventional scales to create beautifully awkward guitar harmonies. Dan GB (bass) brings a rhythmic precision shaped by years as a hardcore punk drummer, tempered by his love for Italo disco, giving Y’s music an electrifying, mechanical pulse. Brazilian percussion virtuoso Fells adds rhythmic complexity and endless possibilities on drums, while Harry McHale’s innovative saxophone work reimagines the instrument as a commanding lead voice in the band’s sonic palette.
The Windmill, a revered hub for cutting-edge acts, quickly became Y’s home stage, where their “theme song” Why turned into a live-show centerpiece. Initially conceived with backing tracks, the band surprised even themselves by delivering the song’s explosive energy live, creating an “audio party” that rivals any studio-enhanced performance.
In November 2024, Y signed with SO Recordings & Hideous Mink Records, marking a pivotal moment in their journey. Their debut EP is slated for release in April 2025, heralded by a string of exhilarating live shows that promise to solidify Y’s reputation as one of the most captivating new acts in the scene.
Whether through their genre-bending music or chaotic-yet-precise performances, Y embodies the beauty of contradictions, crafting a sound that is as bold as it is unclassifiable.
With his explosive blend of glam-punk, psychedelia, and goth influences, Brighton's ELLiS·D guarantees an energetic live show, with an explosion of whiplash riffs, psychedelic break downs, false endings and rip-roaring returns.
Sophomore EP Spill on Crafting Room Recordings is written and performed entirely by ELLiS·D himself (aka Ellis Dickson) at Hackney Road studios with Shuta Shinoda (Hot Chip, Jenny Beth), ‘Drifting’ offers the closing track of ELLiS·D’s Spill EP, a seven song jetstream of rocket-fuelled, goth-tinged glam-punk, infested with 21st century paranoia:
Ellis has been making a name for himself all across Europe and the UK, with festival performances at key tastemaker events like Soundcity, Brighten The Corners, The Great Escape and Live At Leeds, and European heavyweights; Best Kept Secret, Haldern Pop and Leffingeleuren, as well as supporting some of the finest talent in the UK such as Fat Dog, GANS and BILK.
Supporters include BBC Radio 6Music (New Music Fix, Tom Robinson, Emily Pilbeam), Radio X (John Kennedy), So Young Magazine, NME, Far Out, Hard of Hearing and Rodeo.
Horsefair are a post-rock and art-punk six piece honing sharp turns and towering swells of noise down to a science. Anchored by the haunting alto timbre of lead vocalist & saxophonist Kate Francis, Horsefair channels the unnerving power of PJ Harvey, the hypnotic chamber rock of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and the post-rock edge of Mogwai. In a single breath, the band can whip a crowd into a frenzy and then subdue them into hushed, cathedral-like stillness.
