Astronomy on Tap Bristol: Planets and Particles at The Lansdown

A event on Today. The event starts at 18:30.

Drop in at The Lansdown for an out of this world evening of astronomy! Our second Bristol event will feature talks from Joshua Ford, University of Bristol Ph.D. researcher, who will teach us about why Titan is the most interesting place in the solar system and Vedanshu Mahajan, University of Bristol Ph.D. researcher, discussing “Astroparticles and Dark Matter”. We will have a fun quiz and maybe even some prizes!

The event is FREE and all are welcome! We operate on a first come first served basis, so make sure you get there on time.

Titan: The Most Interesting Place in the Solar System – Joshua Ford

Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, is an alien, yet surprisingly familiar world. It is the only place besides Earth where liquid flows across its surface to form lakes and seas, and it’s the only moon with a thick, dense atmosphere. Yet, don’t be fooled by its Earth-like appearance. With a surface temperature of -179℃, the lakes are filled with liquid methane that evaporate to form clouds and drive weather systems. Water ice covers the surface as hard as rock, while the atmosphere is rich in plastic derivatives, organic compounds and complex chemistry. In this talk, I will showcase discoveries from spacecraft and telescope observations and explain why Titan may be the most interesting place in the Solar System.

Astroparticles & Dark Matter – Vedanshu Mahajan

In the context of deep underground detectors, we’ll be going into why dark matter is a clear missing puzzle piece that we absolutely must find at some point in our future human history. We’ll then talk about the physics of deep underground detectors, our main methods of searching for them, and implications of different results in the field!
