Dave Bixby at The Louisiana
Headfirst Editor's Pick

"Sell out warning! Dark psych private press folk dreams made flesh! The rediscovery of Dave Bixby’s monumental ‘69 exploration of acid-casualty spirituality, Ode to Quetzalcoatl, sent astral ripples through the net. The fact he’s here, at the Louie, feels like a once-in-a-lifetime re-write of freak folk history FFO: Skip Spence, Efficient Space, Linda Perhacs, Robbie Basho."

Dave Bixby

Dave’s definitive loner acid folk album, Ode to Quetzalcoatl, was recorded following a long period of time Dave spent in what he calls ‘the void’, a dark, depressive episode after a prolonged period of taking LSD almost daily. Dave came out of the void and turned to God, a journey and transformation Ode to Quetzalcoatl documents. The haunting 1969 album was reissued by Spanish label Guerssen in 2009, catching the attention of private press collectors everywhere.

Dave’s lived a vivid and fascinating life, beginning with his leadership within a Michigan-based Christian cult only known as “The Group.” Always a loner and an adventurer, Dave left the group after being sent to various corners of the country to launch new chapters, built a cabin and lived off the land. He became a park ranger in Lake Havasu, a singing cowboy in the Grand Canyon, and sailed down the Colorado River to Baja California in a boat he built himself. Today he lives in nearby Williams, Arizona where he continues to make music.

Dan Pacini

Dan Pacini is a picker of guitars and banjos, and a singer of songs. Originally found under a gooseberry bush before growing up in Gloucestershire, he can now often be seen pedalling his bike around Bristol. Having played in Hypothetics and with Myer U Clark, he now sets forth in his own regard with his own songs about things he has seen and thought about himself. He also runs Long Cat Recording Co, host of the alternative folk night held on the last Thursday of each month at the Star and Dove in Bristol.

Scarlet Reading

Scarlet Reading is a British singer-songwriter and guitarist, making something-like-folk music. Having grown up on the south coast and now living in Bristol, she writes about the ocean, about driving and walking in vast landscapes. Her upcoming debut album explores these things, with her soft and clear voice dipping in and out and in between violins and flutes. Shes normally found playing solo with a great spangling resonator guitar.
