Natives are a band who have learned their trade the old way; through years of touring the UK toilet circuit in a transit van on it's last legs, sleeping on floors and gradually building an extremely loyal fan base. Slowly making the transition from playing to nobody but the sound man in the back rooms of dingy pubs to filling the UK's smaller venues at their own headline shows - no small feat.
After locking themselves away in their practice room - a converted farm building isolated in the forest, the band taught themselves basic production skills and soon had a stack of demos which would eventually make up their debut full length. These demos found their way into the hands of producer John Feldmann who contacted the band via Twitter to discuss working together. A few phone calls later and Natives were flying to LA to add themselves to the list of bands which Feldmann has given his magic touch to previously (Good Charlotte, Panic At The Disco, The Used.)
The band credit John (and Brandon Paddock who worked alongside Feldmann in this first session) for helping craft their early sound "We had all these ideas and John and Brandon helped us turn them into finished songs. We learned so much about structure and arrangement from them. Without doubt the band wouldn't sound the way it does had we worked with different people".
"We got home from that session in America and wrote a brand new set of songs. We went back to old ideas and put what we'd learned into practice, tweaking structures and rounding everything off. We then booked out a studio in Southampton and Brandon flew over to finish the recording with us."
The result is 'Indoor War', the bands long awaited and highly anticipated debut album, set for release March 17th via Transmission Records.
"'Indoor War' tells the story of a character called Alvima who suffers a huge loss and can't deal with the pain. He decides that from this moment on, he will live his life making decisions based upon logic and science rather than emotions. We were fascinated by this idea of a conflict between science and love all going on inside someone's head."
The first half of the album lyrically talks about the low point, the tragic event "When you took it all, you left me on this island, I was on my own" and the dark, brutally logical side which Alvima embraces rather than face up to what's happened "I hid my heart away unsure of it's existance, I left my mind to sit and calculate the distance".
"Half way through the album there is this moment where he just lets it all out and embraces emotion. The second half of the album talks about the power of positivity, love, feeling alive and fighting for all of these things. 'A switch has gone off in my mind and proved my heart is a fighter, and the light at the end of the tunnel, it's getting brighter and brighter'. 'Fight for your soul, don't let it go, we're never holding back'."
