A vivid sonic odyssey reflecting on the reverential place rivers hold in our culture and the stories hidden in their depths; a deeply personal exploration of the unceasing relationship between an individual and their environment.

Beautifully crafted by cultish troubadour Alun Sanger and members of the global-jazz collective BEJE/British European Jazz Ensemble, this project powerfully juxtaposes incendiary beat poet wordsmithery and time-warped lounge cabaret crooner vibes with characterful straight-ahead jazz, vibrant funk-soul, and ethereally spacious jazz-fusion à la Miles Davis.

They channel this strange matrix of sound into a superbly evocative 'riverology' spoken word/rap/jazz suite that reflects on the transience, tranquility, and turbulence of the flow of mighty rivers from source to sea, and of the human encounters that make the river what it is.

It draws inspiration from the Welsh concept of 'milltir sgwâr' ('square mile'), of how a people come to be shaped by the histories, culture, and traditions of a place, and how a place is shaped in return by human connection.

'RIVERS FLOW NOT PAST, BUT THROUGH US: EXCITING EVERY CELL AND FIBER IN OUR BODIES, MAKING THEM SING AND GLIDE.'
JOHN MUIR (NATURALIST, 1838-1914)

'LANDSCAPE POETRY CAN SPEAK ABOUT US - THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN, LOOK AT AND REMEMBER THE PLACES... WHICH HAVE, IN TURN, REMEMBERED US; AS INDIVIDUALS, AS COMMUNITIES, AS HISTORY.'
OWEN SHEERS (WELSH NOVELIST/POET/PLAYWRIGHT)

ALUN SANGER
Of Welsh, Gypsy, and circus family heritage, Thameside born, raised in the Yorkshire Dales, and now a smallholder in a Piedmont Alpine valley, Alun Sanger is a political street band trumpeter turned academic and urban planner turned quixotic performance-poet, with a unique baritone voice and deep musicality that is entirely his own. His 'Circus Experience' is named in honour of his own traced ancestry, the Sanger Circus, owned by a forbear and one of Britain's largest touring troupes in the 19th century, a rival to the behemoth of PT Barnum's circus. He uses the 'circus' as an all-encompassing metaphor for everyday life/God's creation.

Part of the BEJE 'Siblings Not Fools' Autumn 2024 tour, a celebration of the creative energy and unity possible when cultures meet through the medium of music, and a testament to Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1964 declaration: 'live together as brothers or perish together as fools'. This series of collective collaborations with international guest artists from Korea, Palestine, Italy, and Wales, is presented primarily at grassroots and non-traditional venues. Concerts are recorded live for an anthology album to be released in the new year.
