A
gig
held at The Thunderbolt
on Saturday 19th April. The event starts at 20:00.
A true original, Vic Godard + Subway Sect, are back and better than ever. Godard, arguably the greatest songwriter of that era, nearly missed the boat altogether. Subway Sect would have produced one of the best albums of that time, but were derailed by bad luck and poor management, and the album never saw light of day until 2007.
Subway Sect shared stages with The Clash, Sex Pistols and The Buzzcocks as far back as 1976 and were an example of what British punk could have become. Godard went on to explore rockabilly, jazz and swing, developing into a fine songwriter whilst maintaining the fire of his original band.
'If such a thing could be measured, Subway Sect were, for a couple of seasons in 1978, the greatest punk rock group in the UK, if not the world. ' - Jon Savage
'Vic is the great lost soul of the era: his nihilism is more extreme than anyone's. He seemed to hsve seen through the circus which he was being enticed into, from day one. He saw all the contradictions and didn't want to be a pop star. ' - Geoff Travis, Rough Trade
THE BLUE ORCHIDS:Manchester's legendary Blue Orchids are back! Christened the Blue Orchids by John Cooper Clarke, they formed in 1979 when Martin Bramah left The Fall after recording the debut album Live At The Witch Trials.
They signed to Rough Trade Records in 1980 and were championed by the late great John Peel, before touring with Echo & The Bunnymen and then The Velvet Underground's Nico, serving as both backing group and support act.
Over the years Blue Orchids have included in their line up members of The Smiths, The Durutti Column, The Fall and Buzzcocks.
Martin Bramah reformed the band last year for John Peel Day events in London, Liverpool and Manchester and it's the classic Rough Trade era recordings that the band is now playing at their live shows, to great acclaim.
'It's been great to breath new life into these songs again after so long - they're sounding so fresh and original, I could have written them all yesterday! ' - Martin Bramah 2012.
Don't miss the chance to see this seminal act play their stunning live set of sonic gems!
