THIS TOWN IS FALLING APART. LET’S DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY.
VAULT FESTIVAL 2023 SHOW OF THE WEEK NOMINEE

‘changes tones at the speed of light with exceptionally ingenious flair’
★★★★★ (Broadway World)

Before its Edinburgh Fringe run at the Pleasance, Coin Toss Collective’s critically acclaimed sell-out show returns to Bristol for one night only.

Devised and performed by an ‘ingenious’ company of seven, this multilayered show tells the story of UK communities battling coastal erosion and draws on research into affected communities in East Anglia. This high-energy theatrical cocktail blends clowning, physical theatre, and live art to explore climate anxiety, what home means and what we owe to each other.

FREAK OUT! was developed with choreographers Anthony Matsena (Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist), Deepraj Singh (BSA) and Papatango Prize-winning playwright Matt Grinter. It has previously been performed at Weston Studio, Bristol Old Vic (2022), VAULT Festival, London (2023) and Camden People’s Theatre, London (2024).

‘both a love letter and a tribute to our coastlines, this is not one to miss' ★★★★ (Theatre & Tonic)

‘a poetically playful and creatively choreographed moment for reflection’ ★★★★ (Fringebiscuit)

‘At no point are you lost, but at no point do you know what might happen next.’ ★★★★ (A Youngish Perspective)

Coin Toss Collective are a seven-strong company of ‘joyfully chaotic’ theatre-makers and performers – Alyssa Thomas, Ben Notice, Claudia Zita Kurucz, Rosie Mullaney, Sol Woodroffe, Sophia Oriogun-Williams & Weronika Dwornik.

The company formed in 2021 through Made in Bristol, a year-long theatre-making residency at Bristol Old Vic. Just like the act of tossing a coin, their approach to theatre-making is playful, curious and open to experimenting with ‘liveness’, which often takes their work in exciting and unconventional directions. They have made three shows together so far.

Contains strong language and themes of climate anxiety.
This is most graphically depicted in specific key moments: a scene when two characters submerge their heads in buckets of water and hold their breath, and when one character gets physically beaten by the cast using by beach items (such as woggles and balls) whilst a projection of extreme weather due to climate change plays in the background.
