Be Part Of by Monika Truong
Performance time: 19:30

I am free,
A free individual,
Free member of society.
I know the access, the secret terms,
I identify with them.

When do you feel like you are part of a community? Whose voices are heard and represented in our society? When does individual desire give way to the need for consensus?

Be Part of is an explorative theatre performance that invites you to reflect on the complexity of our identities. In three acts, we confront our own responsibility, play with the desire for freedom and belonging, and last, but not least, start a movement.

We question the norm,
We dissolve, form, transform,
We keep moving.
We are all,
ourselves.

Monika Truong makes her UK debut, following a digital residency with MAYK in 2021, supported by Pro Helvetia. You can listen to Monika’s Thought Residency here [LINK]

Monika Truong is a sinologist, sociologist and theatre professional based in Zurich. She combines different disciplines and perspectives, draws from personal experience in order to artistically work on the phenomena of our time. Her academic training shapes her understanding of the cultural heritage of communities. Her Chinese-Vietnamese origins, her Asian appearance as well as her socialization and everyday life in Switzerland complement and sharpen her perspective. In her theatre work, she focuses on interpersonal relationships, on what connects or separates people in social interactions. She stages participatory performances, which deal with the asymmetry of social possibilities and power relations and show alternatives to today’s reality. Her work “Enjoy Racism” (together with Thom Reinhard) in coproduction with the Fabriktheater Zürich and ROXY Birsfelden was shown in 2018 at the festivals Impulse in Mühlheim an der Ruhr and Politik im Freie Theater in Munich, where it was awarded the festival prize. She participated in the virtual residency programme of Pro Helvetia UK, which was hosted by MAYK. Since 2020 Monika Truong has been an associate artist at Gessnerallee Zurich who co-produce her work. Her show “Be Part Of” premiered in September 2021. Currently, she is working on “Motherhood – A Performance Evaluation” which will premiere in April 2022.
