The last few years have been difficult for the arts, but circus especially.
The circus sector needs support now more than ever.
How can we work together, to create a joined up ecology of support and advocacy?
How can we convince the funders that a sector support organisation is of value?
Now it is time for the sector to work together to define a way forward.
In this meeting we will share the journey so far, then focus on action, pooling skills and resources towards building a network and a potential funding bid. The day will include networking opportunities and artist, producer and programmer speed dating. Come and be part of shaping a more supported, sustainable and healthier circus sector.
Background
Circus Change Up is an initiative to set up a sector support organisation for UK circus, with freelancers at the core. Over the last year there has been a small amount of managed funds from the Arts Council to set up a structure and sustainability, however attempts to do so have been unsuccessful and the managed funds are now coming to an end.
In the meantime, different initiatives and far-reaching projects have emerged: Circus Village, Circus City’s New Authors commissioning group, Rural Touring Strategy plus others in the pipeline. So how do we, as a sector bring these opportunities together to build networks, equalise opportunity, improve representation and advocate for our sector?
It is clear that the sector needs development, advocacy and support now more than ever. The last round of NPO funding withdrew money from the circus sector, its place in the cultural sector seems more vulnerable now than ever, despite some really excellent work being made. With Brexit, opportunities for exchange and work abroad have decreased and the National Centre for Circus Arts and Circomedia report that new students applying for training are lower this year.
A lot of work has already been put into Circus Change Up and as a sector we must now come together to action that work. #bristolcircuscity
