Immerse yourself in the legendary stories, culture and history surrounding St Pauls Carnival at this cinema evening presented in collaboration with Cables & Cameras as part of the St Pauls Carnival Fringe.
Featuring a series of four short films charting Windrush legacy, Caribbean and Carnival Culture and Black Britain from talented black & brown local creatives, including:
*Home Carnival Queen*
A beautiful exploration of UK carnival culture seen through the lens of black women and expressed in dance, music and mas costume.
Directed by Somina 'Mena' Fombo
*HATS*
A story based on true events when a mother develops dementia and her daughter tries to find a suitable care home. It shows that the Windrush Generation and their descendants still need to wear different hats in order to fit in.
Directed by Michelle Pascal
*Celebrate What?*
A 1968 BBC documentary that covered the first St Pauls Carnival. As its title implied, it looked critically at the housing, employment and cultural discrimination faced by recent black immigrants in Bristol.
Directed by Colin Thomas
*Inna Wi Carnival: Reflections of a Generation*
A St Pauls Carnival production which joins a conversation between local elders from the founding generation who recollect their memories and all that St Pauls Carnival means and entails.
Directed by Keziah Wenham-Kenyon
A post-screening panel discussion will feature local people from the Afro-Caribbean community reflecting on this year’s Carnival theme ‘Learning from Legends’. Plus we will be serving a bespoke Caribbean twist on cinema food, a Caribbean-inspired cocktail bar and entertainment in the Trinity Community Garden for the full Carnival experience!
