A gig on Saturday 24th October. The event starts at 20:00.
An evening of irresistible contemporary acoustic jazz in the eyrie-like Loft on the 4th Floor of Southville's Tobacco Factory (access via Tobacco Factory Theatres entrance), in celebration of the first year of the Factory Foundation.
Uphill Game is an acoustic contemporary jazz quartet based in Bristol, UK. It plays open, dynamic, driving, delicate, exploratory, groove- and melody-focused music, inspired by the likes of the William Parker Quartet but with its own distinctive collective voice. Currently one of the UK’s best-kept jazz secrets, the band is delighted to release its first album this spring, recorded live in the sumptuous acoustic of St George’s Bristol.
The band is led by double-bassist & composer Riaan Vosloo. Riaan has played with Nostalgia 77, Tongue Fu, Gregory Porter, Jamie Cullum, and many more. Drummer Matt Stockham Brown leads his own project 6161, won a Montreux Jazz Festival talent award in 2019 and has played with the likes of Massive Attack, Rodriguez (Searching For Sugarman), and Cosmo Sheldrake. Tenor saxophonist Jake McMurchie and flugelhornist Pete Judge are the horn section of BBC Jazz Award winners Get The Blessing, and established composers and band-leaders in their own right.
Plus there'll be time during the interval, and before and after the gig, to take a closer look at the work of the exhibition on the Loft's walls, which features a diverse collective of Bristol-linked contemporary artists:
* Nik Ramage (@nikramage) – Kinetic sculpture and Sunday Market outdoor walk.\ * Joe Magee (@mrjoemagee) – Conceptual illustration, printmaking, and filmmaking.\ * Henning Löhlein (@henninglohlein) – Oil paintings (Co-organiser).\ * Rtiiika (@rtiiika) – Bold, minimalist murals and digital illustration.\ * E_MichelleArt (@e_michelleart) – Fine art and expressive painting.\ * Jacqueline Braithwaite – Mixed media, heritage studies, fashion illustrations, and figure illustrations.\ * Ruben Warren – Industrial Welded sculpture.
