Strange Relations with Ralf Webb at Bookhaus
Headfirst Editor's Pick

"Bookhaus hosts Forward Prize shortlisted poet Ralf Webb to discuss new non-fiction work Strange Relations: an emotive and insightful look at four literary heavyweights of mid-century America - Williams, McCullers, Baldwin and Cheever - and how they turned a distinctly queer lens on gender and sexuality at a turning point for modern masculinity."

A event held at Bookhaus on Wednesday 28th August. The event starts at 18:00.

Strange Relations explores the crisis in mid-century masculinity and the lives of four bisexual writers who fought to express and embody alternative possibilities. Building on Walt Whitman’s philosophy of the love between men, Ralf Webb considers the ways in which Tennessee Williams, Carson McCullers, James Baldwin and John Cheever resisted in their art, as well as in their relationships, the damaging expectations of contemporary gender and sexuality.

With a curious, intelligent and sensitive gaze, Ralf Webb sheds new light on each writer. Together, these artists offer a powerful and moving argument for a transformative new masculinity, grounded in fluidity, love and intimacy.

Ralf will be in conversation with Joe Vaughan. Tickets cost £6 and include a glass of wine or a soft drink, plus £2 off the book. Presented by bookhaus.
