The Birdcage at Bristol Megascreen
Headfirst Editor's Pick

"Superlative, high-camp satire of family-values conservatism via Hollywood’s take on French stage comedy La Cage Aux Folles. Miami cabaret couple Robin Williams and Nathan Lane go from drag glamour to farcical subterfuge as they play it straight for the sake of their son and his would-be in-laws. A watershed moment for LGBTQ+ representation in mainstream media, and a real gem in the Williams oeuvre."

Come as you are and celebrate! Queer Vision Film Festival is delighted to present this groundbreaking and uproariously funny comedy gem from director Mike Nichols.

The Birdcage is loosely adapted from the farcical French play, and its subsequent film adaptation, La Cage aux Folles. It follows cabaret club owners and lovers Armand (Robin Williams) and Albert (Nathan Lane) receiving word that their son is intent to marry the daughter of a controversial conservative politician (Gene Hackman).

To accommodate, the couple make sincere attempts to hide their true selves when the father of the bride abruptly comes to visit. But as their stay increases, the truth must eventually win out.

Thirty years on, The Birdcage is still a fierce and uncompromising celebration of love in all its forms
