We’re excited to host this one off show with Archipelago who at
the time will be fresh from playing A Love Supreme Festival, multi
instrumentalist hero Will Memotone + innovative newcomer Roman
A genre-defying trio of adventurous musicians, formed out of the
North East of England’s creative musical underground. Fronted by
saxophonist, clarinetist, singer and composer Faye MacCalman &
completed by John Pope (Bass) and Christian Alderson (Drums);
their sound is a dreamlike collision of otherworldly atmospheres,
heartfelt song-writing and energetic off-kilter rhythms. Moving
between instruments and effects to create the illusion of a much
larger ensemble, before peeling back to their raw, improvisational
trio form,
As well as championed by BBC’s Giles Peterson and Tom Robinson,
their recent album ‘Echoes to the Sky’ was selected as one of the
best albums of 2021 by Jazzwise Magazine and the group were
nominated for UK Jazz Act of the year in the 2021 Jazz FM Awards
Memotone (Will Yates) is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist and
producer, working with minimal, ambient and contemporary
classical music. Predominantly an improviser, recent years have
seen him lean towards a more free-form approach, exploring jazz,
drone and more meditative musics, also showing a keen
interest in sound design and textural experimentation.
Will has released music with various labels inc Black Acre,
Diskotopia and Avon Terror Corps under numerous aliases as
well as acting as a producer, instrumentalist or writer for releases
on Universal, Warp Records and more
Over the years he has been praised and supported by figures and
publications such as The Wire Magazine, Huw Stephens, Nemone
and Daddy G
