JACK HUES & THE QUARTET FEAT. SYD ARTHUR

Back in 2010s, the then burgeoning Canterbury music scene was largely centered around the now legendary Orange Street Music Club. This intimate venue, located in the immediate vicinity of the city's iconic cathedral, provided the perfect environment for new explorations in music, poetry, jazz and art.

One such evening, a celebration of the original “Canterbury Sound”, saw local jazz act The Quartet team up with Canterbury (both geographically and stylistically) psychedelic rock band Syd Arthur. It was a remarkable night, one that saw two drummers, electric and double basses, two guitars, electric violin, keyboards, saxophone and trumpet combine to play an extended version of Hugh Hopper’s masterpiece “Facelift” and a medley of Soft Machine themes from Volume 2 and Third before culminating in an epic performance of a special arrangement of “Nobody’s Fault But My Own” (from Beck’s Mutation album) – an awe inspiring noise!

The following summer, Jack Hues and Joel Magill organised a recording session near Canterbury to capture the piece. What you hear here is a document of that day, July 13th, 2012.

The Quartet – Jack Hues with longtime partner Sam Bailey, plus Led Bib's crack rhythm section, Liran Donin and Mark Holub – joined Syd Arthur’s Joel Magill, Liam Magill and Fred Rother, with Paul Booth featuring on saxophone and Chris Hughes assisting on production duties.

Recording live in the room as an eight-piece ensemble, a number of takes were laid down and later compiled and edited by Jack and Joel in the mixing process. And so a precious snapshot of a massively creative and exciting time was captured.

At the end of 2012, Syd Arthur would release their debut album On An On and begin the next phase of their long, strange trip.

Jack Hues and The Quartet have continued to release experimental music, recently concentrating on a series of collaborative releases.
